Unexplained

May 14th, 2007 by cathtyy

There is a feeling I cannot explain nor describe… it is around the heart… feel it sometimes when i cry… when i feel that i have no one to turn to.. when I feel that I am a nobody…when i feel that I am just another human in people’s life…

What is the meaning of love? Why do people choose to live together? What is the difference between a friend and a mate? What is the meaning of life?

There are times when my mind is full of such questions.Sometimes it drove me crazy!!! It makes me feel like an unwanted being, forgotten in this rat race world.

Anyway, enough of the self pitying episode!! Get you butt off the chair and your eyes off the computer screen. Do something more meaningful!!  ooophs…

March 18, I noticed that one of my toe nails went blueblack…last week, around April 18… This was what happened…

I felt something tersangkut some where down there at my toes. I found that my t103_1053oe nail was tersangkut on my blanket la, bedsheet la, this la that la…sigh… So I decided to PULL it out!!! Don’t scream yet!!! Because I failed to do that… I was scared too, hahaha… The most I did was till shown in this picture. Then I took my sharp scissors from my manicure set, slowly and carefully I cut the edge of my toe nail that was still attached to my skin… don’t worry, it wasn’t painful at all.

I feel sort of a wierd accomplishment after I hage cut it out, hahahaha, so that is how my toe nail looks now in the picture here… but there are no more dry blood stain on it now. YAY toe nail!!!

Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachthani? (Matthew 27:46)

April 22nd, 2007 by cathtyy

1_1He was a carpenter, a carpenter’s son, son of Joseph (John6:42), a Jew (John4:20), a Nazarene, a good man (John7:12) a teacher (John8:4), a master, a Rabbi (John1:49), a prophet (John4:19), a decedent of King David, King of Israel (John1:49).

2 He is now known as the Lamb of God (John 1:29), the Holy One of God (John6:69), the Lord (John11:27), the vine (John15:5), the Bread of Life (John6:35), the healer (John5), the bridegroom (John3:29), the Messiah (John1:41), the Saviour (John4:42), the gate (John10:9), The Word of God (John 1:14), the Good Shepherd (John10:11), the resurrection (John11:25), the Way, the Light and the Truth, the Son of God (John 1:49), Son of Man (John 5:27), the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords

3 I.N.R.I. was the accusation… "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews" (John19:19), written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek (John 19:20)… It was indeed a Good Friday…He was crucified in between two sinners at Golgotha (in Aramaic, meaning, place of the Skull) but what sin did he committed? Even on his last hours he was tested… "Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!" (Luke 23:39).

4 Nails were driven into the flesh…innocent blood flowed …yet he said…"Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing." (Luke23:34) A loyal son who once so scared that he asked the Father to take away his final task on earth, the reason he was sent here… But, all these were asked to be done according to the Father’s will but not his own will. He knew why he was put into the situation. He knew where he was led to.

5 Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani! [My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"(Matthew27:46]  That was what he said while hanging on the cross … but his last words were "Father, into thy hands I command my spirit…" still, he submitted himself to the Father’s will despite his weakness.

102_0088_3I really cannot take it anymore… since I write blogs, I want to let all those who read my blog now…:D (I am wondering who reads my blog besides Sookie, Andrew and maybe 38 Karen Francisca)

POINT 1-  50 years of Independence?Dscf6097

The government  is busy promoting Malaysia (Visit Malaysia year 2007) in accordance with our so called 50 years of Independence. This issue did not bother me at all for the past 28 years. I think I was too lazy to count but this year, 50 years, easier to do the subtraction or addition so I was confused for the first time…

Before this, I do remember that we were reminded of year 1957 on Aug 31st but this time when I actually counted it myself…and recalled what I studied in school… anyone know what I am trying to say here? Never mind… I am gonna say it anyway and I doubt people remember such insignificant FACT…

Aug 1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman, stood at Dataran Merdeka, shouting Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! Declaring Independence in MALAYA. yes, It was Malaya, NOT Malaysia. When did the name Malaysia came about then?? It was clearly stated in both the websites below and in our secondary school text book that MALAYSIA is formed in 1963 when Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak joined Malaya. Sadly, Singapore was "expelled" in 1965 but, we, remain as Malaysia ever since.

http://education.yahoo.com/reference/factbook/my/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia

So, if we really call ourselves educated, 2007-1963 should come up with 44 as the answer. I am not sure why 50. I don’t mind at all if Peninsula Malaysia want to celebrate its 50th year of Independence but please DO NOT USE MALAYSIA in your celebration because there are MORE in MALAYSIA. Do not forget us, Sabah and Sarawak. We are also part of Malaysia and we did not get indenpendence until 1963. What makes the Federal Government forgot about us?

It is just so hard to accept the fact that the government forgot about us…How can that happen? Even though just 2 states, we are so much bigger than all the other states in peninsula and we contributed so much to the economic of the country! WHAT ARE WE? As an East Malaysian, I really feel hurt. Hurt that my existence is not ACKNOWLEDGED by the government. (dah la we are the minority). How can I develop the patriotism in me?? How can I LOVE my country when my country does not acknowledge my existence?

One thing that surprises me is, there were no complains at all from the leaders of these 2 forgotten states… what is the problem with people?? Too proud to admit that they cannot count?? For the sake of UNITY, AMEND it DAMN IT! It might be small matter for some people but the fact is the fact!At least explain to the people why 50…there are a lot of people who can count in the country…maybe some just don’t care… Any government would LOVE unity in the country. Why would anyone put the unity at risk for such a small matter?? what is it behind the "50"?

Fact 2-  Who are Malaysians?

From both the links above, we can roughly know who Malaysians are or at least, they are enough for my point. This issue is addressed for those who are very very really weak in their general knowledge about Malaysia. When I think about it, maybe this is also the reason why no one say a word about the previous issue, because they did not realise that Sabah and Sarawak are PART of MALAYSIA too!

I have encountered this numerous times but yesterday, a lady (in her 40s), talked to me and I told her I am going to Sabah soon for good. She said," Oh, you don’t want to stay in Malaysia anymore ka?" I was so ^%#*@$&# but I know it is useless to explain… or maybe next time I should try explain. Have they ever realise that Sabah and Sarawak is of Malaysia too?

God! Are we considered ALIENS (as Americans put it) all this while?? We are just from much BIGGER state compare to all those in peninsula and further from the rest… but we are still of the same country dear all countrymen…:(

Couldn’t help feeling like an outcast, a forgotten….the left outs… Did we really had our independence? Does anyone know about us? One of the nastiest feeling is to exist in people’s non-existing world.

Unity…That is what all the leaders hope for their country…Think about it you leaders out there… Just think about it…

My Cousins

April 8th, 2007 by cathtyy

102_0580_1As year pass by, my favourite cousins also change. Usually I like my younger cousins better than older ones. During recent Chinese New Year, I took a lot of pictures of my favourite cousins. These two cousins of mine are twins. Surely they are my favourite because they are the first pair of twins in our family history!!

These two angels has the sweetest smile a kid can ever have. Both have dimples102_0517 when they smile. The boy has big round eyes while the girl has a more Chinese-liked eyes. Both has the thin lips that I like. Though they are just 4 years old, they know a lot of things like most kids nowadays does. Quite mischievous at times, emotional and even mood swings!!

I had a friend visited me right before Chinese New Year and we taught these two102_0535 kids a different way to play with the balloons. They were so excited about it and screaming in their high-pitched voice when the balloons bounce on and off their palms. It was fun playing with Auntie Li Pin, hahahaha

102_0623On the first day of Chinese New Year, the boy fall sick. He had a fever and refuse to eat. The night before he was sleeping in the living room accompanied by his loving father. A father who always put the family in the first place, who works hard to provide for the family and a father who is so sensitive to the children’s needs.

102_0900The Man And The Myth

Born in 340 BC, Qu-Yuan lived in the turbulent period of the Zhou Dynasty. Qu-Yuan was the first man officially recorded in Chinese history as a poet and scholar. His contribution to Chinese literature is the Chu Ci, or Elegies of Chu, a compilation of poems. Another famous work of his is the poetic work known as the "Heavenly Questions", a series of 170 questions that both guided the reader and asked questions regarding creation, the universe, historical events and legends important to the Chinese pantheon. The Heavenly Question were said to have been carved in stone on the ancestral halls of noble and former kings in the state of Chu. Copies of it survive today, and have been translated to English, though the original flavour of terse, tightly constructed verse is lost. Certainly, a full understanding of Chinese is required to fully enjoy this literary work.

Qu-Yuan: The Righteous Poet

Part story and fantastic myth, Qu-Yuan’s deeds and actions are commemorated by Chinese communities around the world. According to history, Qu-Yuan lived in a province of China known as the Chu province (now known as Hubei province in modern China). Qu-Yuan was selected as a Minister of Laws and Ordinances by the King of Chu, Mei Huai. Before China was unified under one emperor, rulers of the various provinces called themselves kings.  Qu-Yuan was responsible for drafting all the laws in the state of Chu.

During this turbulent period of history, the three major kingdoms were the Chu, Qi and Qin. All of them vied to conquer the others and rule all of China. At that time, the Qi kingdom was asked to be an ally of the Chu kingdom. The King of Qin was aware of this, and tool steps to ensure that did not happen.

The Betrayal

The Qin kingdom sent their ambassador with an order: break the alliance and Qin would offer Chu 600 square miles of land. Struck senseless by greed, the King of Chu broken his ties with Qi. However, the Qin reneged on the deal and only offered six square miles instead. The King of Chu was furious and declare war. A bloody conflict ensued.

The following year, at a stalemate, the Qin negotiated with the Chu and were offered a piece of land called Han-Zhong. The King of Chu refused, and instead asked for the head of Qin ambassador. The Qin ambassador did come to Chu, but through wiles, bribery and guile persuaded the Chi minister Jin-Shang to set him free.

For the duration of this conflict, Qu-Yuan was still an ambassador to Qi. He returned, and advised the King of Chu to kill the perfidious ambassador but he was too late. The ambassador had already left the province. In 299 BC, the King of Qin province invited the King of Chu for a conference in Wu Guan, the capital of today’s Shaanxi [province. The King of Qin proposed ties of marriage to strengthen diplomatic relations with the Chu and to attend the conference.

Qu-Yuan warned against such treachery and lies. Qu-Yuan was disliked by the chief eunuch of Chu, one Zhan Shang. Zhan Shang spoke slander into the ears of the king, vilifying Qu-Yuan. The King of Chu became furious and demoted Qu-Yuan to become a common clerk. he King of Chu ignored Qu-Yuan’s advice and went to the conference, urged on by his son and minister.

After that conference, the King of Chu was captured by the King of Qin. He fell into the trap and died. Qu-Yuan criticised the king’s son for telling his father to meet the King of Qin. The king’s son was ashamed and angered at his criticism, and sent Qu-Yuan into exile.

After Qu-Yuan exile, the state of Chu went into terminal decline. The capital was sacked in 278BC and later became a vassal state under the forces of Qin, resulting in China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.

Rivers Of Sorrows

During his exile, Qu-Yuan composed the Li Sao, an allegorical work about himself seeking an understanding ruler. His poem and other works would influence scholars for many centuries to come. In time, he felt sorrow. He saw corruption festering within his beloved country and yet he was punished for being loyal.

Full of despair, he tied himself to a rock and flung himself into the Mi Luo river. People living along the banks of the river heard of his disappearance and rushed out in boats to try and rescue him.

No matter how hard they tried, they could not find him or his remains. Afraid that fish would devour his body, the villagers made glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves and threw them into the water. They hoped the fish would eat the dumplings instead of his remains. In addition, they used dragon-headed boats and beat drums to try and scare the fishes away.

Qu-Yuan disappeared on the 5th day of the 5th months in the Chinese lunar calendar. And this has evolved into today’s tradition of wrapping dumplings to eat, and racing dragon boats. So, bear a thought for Qu-Yuan, the poet and brave patriot, next time you savour a delicious rice dumpling.

Dumplings and Dragons Part I- Pearl Magazine May 2003

March 30th, 2007 by cathtyy

102_0899Delicious savory or sweet dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves mark the celebration of the jung cheet festival. Celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month every year, the dumpling festival, or jung cheet in Cantonese, is heralded by grand dragon boat races held in Penang and with the wrapping and cooking of rice dumplings or jung.

These rice dumplings come in two main types, either savory or sweet. The savory ones also come in variety of fillings including salted egg yolk, pork, chicken, minced prawns, mushrooms and more. Savory dumplings can be eaten straight, or dipped in sugar. There are now halal versions available, and these dumplings are available all year round. The other version is sweet, and made of glutinous rice mixed with lye water. These sweet dumplings are normally smaller, and dipped in  sugar or gula Melaka syrup. Though there is an air of gaiety and celebration about it, the original reason for the festival is more sombre. The dumpling festival commemorates Qu-Yuan, one of China’s greatest poet and patriots, who protested against a corrupt government. Wrongfully dismissed, he protested against the justice and drowned himself in a river. They sought to recover his body from the river he drowned in, but it was never found.

So that his body won’t be eaten by fish, the people then threw dumplings made of rice into the water for fish to eat instead of his remains and boat raced throughout the expanse of the river to find him. Though the ages, the celebration has evolved to become two rather distinct, albeit related festival, namely the Dragon Boat festival where teams of rowers led by a drummer race a dragon-headed boat to reach the finishing line, and the Dumpling festival. The Dragon Boat festival is normally held from the 15th to the 16th of June in Penang. The dumpling festival usually lasts throughout the month.

My 25 days course-

March 26th, 2007 by cathtyy

Everything was taken from us during registration, ie, our ID, money, wallet/purse, cell phone, cigarrette, etc.
we went for 4 expeditinos and 1 solo during those 25 days besides having some rope challenges [including vertical playground, pamper pole, flying fox, rock climbing and reppeling], rafting, some initiative games, orienteering & morning run.

Expedition 1: 5KM Kayaking 2Days1Night

Things at OB are quite basic ones so we din have dome tents for our overnights. We have to learn knots to build our own tents, cooking with pots and wok, eating rice/noodle instead of burgers like at camp.

Epedition 2: Orienteering 2D1N

forgot how far it was but at least 5KM. we have to carry our own food (canned food mostly) and our rope and tent sheets & personal stuff & most importantly, a gallon of water each person…

we have to follow the bearing found by connecting the check points given by our instructor. we had a formation of 2 "sword"man for clearing our path, navigator, expedition leader, pacer, ironmen and sweeper. I was the pacer all the time coz i am too weak to be the swordman, i will get everyone lost if i become the navigator, am not strong enough to be the ironmen (carry extra stuff), hahaha so i am usualy quiet coz counting my steps & not to lost count.

anyhow, we kind of went off track and had to go down very steep hills where at 1 point we thought we are reaching but when we can see the clearing, the people we saw was only as tall as a centimeter!! we were still high up on the hill and it was a dry waterfall…with big rocks… we definitely not going up so we have to go down, using 1 of out tent rope, reppelling down the waterfall, through thorny plants that were not alien to us anymore at that point. We went down coz we heard our instructor’s signal from down there. we were so happy to hear the familiar monkey sound he made. That is the sound they used to locate ppl in the jungle. we blowed our whistle hard & when he heard us, he asked us to just go straight down. I felt that I appreciate the friendship in the group more after that tracking…

the next day, we track back using a dfferent way & it was less challenging physically but, BUT, we have to walk a mile or 2 on "leeches" path!!! We walked through oil palm plantation and passed a lot of thorny palm trees before reaching the entrance of the jungle where the blood suckers are. during the journey back to base, i got 8 leech bites on my ankles and 1 on the back of my NECK!!!!!! This is one of the reason i like the forest in US better… US dun really have leeches but in Msia, you will ALWAYS find leeches. If you go to Mount Kinabalu, the tallest peak in Southeast Asia, you might find Kinabalu Giant Leech that is at least 6 inches long!!!!! Thank god they are not feeding on human blood.

Expedition 3: Whaler 3D2N (pictures in facebook)

Whaler was used in the older time to chatch whaler. thought it has sails, those people row more. it has 3 sails, Jib, main and Mizen. we have to row when there is no wind. Our dirst destination was like 60KM from base. most of us got seasick especially when we start to sail coz we din do anything when we stop rowing.

There were 2 different group including us that went for that same trip that day. we ate packed luch frm the dining hall and that night at 3AM, people start waking up to102_0725 go digging cat’s holes. i am one of those who went for 3 times. There were 21 of us all together & all 20 of us got food poisoning…

The beach were so busy that night. a lot o flash lights, people lining up to go to the spot to do their business. It was really funny actually… at first 1 of my friend who just woke up was told by the one sleeping beside him that Pulau Rumbia (Rumbia Island) is now become Pulau Taik/Tahi (Shit Island). It was really funny to recall things happened during our expeditions.

other than that, P. Rumbia also known for it’s wildboars. They are as tame as domestic cats, so called. you can see their pictures in facebook. It is a major problem to most of the participants coz majority of them are Muslims and they cannot touch any kind of pigs as they are "unclean" animal. dun ask me why coz i am not sure too.

second day, we sailed to a place closer to Lumut town but when we reached Pulau Pangkor, the Island opposite of our base, we faced strong current. There were no wind so we have to row. we rowed for 15 minutes and we din move anywhere… The current were really strong and most of us were tired and some had already gave up. finally when our course director found that it’s not going to work, he told us that we will be towed by the mother boat. i got 4 huge blisters on my right palm from rowing against that current. That night we just slept on the tarp without something over our head coz we wre too lazy to make tents.

third day we rowed all the way back to our base. i kept reminding the rest to row hard so that we can reach before the strong current comes. They rowed  really hard  and better coordination  this day because all  of us did not want to fight the current like the day before!! our instructor was proud of us coz we reach far before the other group.

after that really tiring expedition, we were given a break- 3D2N SOLO camping…

we102_0784 were given a tarp, rope and enough food ration and mosquito coils for 2 nights. Including 2 candles and 10 matches. It was really  cool to be able to stay alone  for a while after the hectic expedition. I was feverish the morning when we start the program & was still having diarrhea. that might be the reason why they put me closest to the exit of the jungle.

There were 3 supernatural encounters by my group members. That is another reason why i am not that fond of Msian jungle…God protected me well, i din see anything, hahhaha.

oh, i forgot to tell that I was the only female participant & they put me alone in a dorm that can fit 24 people!! and the instructor even scare me by telling me that usually "those things" will disturb participants who sleep alone!!! He is really of no help.

Expedition 4 :The Final Expedition 4D3N
we had to sea kayak around Pangkor Island & some other place (44KM) for 2D and tracking for 2D on Pangkor Island (climbing 4 peaks)
I was the sea kayaking leader because i took the single kayak (we had odd number) since i am the only one had tried single kayak b4 (thanks to Bear Creek Aquatic Camp) and most others are firstimer in kayaking. My right wrist is still sore from paddling….

we paddled back to the base and reached at 3PM on the second day.

we showered adn rest for 1 hr before the motherboat bring us to Pangkor Island for overnight, where we will start our tracking the next morning. Again, we have to bring our rations, water, tarps, rope & even our cooking utensils!! we reached lunch place 1 hour late. oh yea, the night before it was drizzling. and we forgot to keep the kindling dry so we din have packed lunch for the tracking. we only munch on apples (3 per pax), sugar crackers and some bread since our other stuff need to be cooked before consuming.

we reached the last peak of the day at 3.45 & continue the last trip down the valley at 4PM. at 5PM, our swordmen starting to get nervous because they couldn’t find the way out. the bushes were so thick that their blunt "knife/sword/whatever u call it"  were not sharp enough to make us a path out. we all start to look behind us to check whether our instructor is wtill with us because during first tracking expedition he will leave us when we took wrong path. Our instructor was with us all the time this XPDC so we thought we were still ok.

102_0764
at 5.30PM, Our instructor took over. our swordmen tried 3 paths & failed. Instructor," Biar saya cari! Kalau macam ini sampai besok pagi pun tak keluar!…."  translation: Let me find the way out! We won’t even be out tomorrow morning if we continue like this

He tried 4 paths. we went down, came up & down a different path & up for 4 times..still couldn’t find the way out. That was known to be the most tricky part of the jungle…

on out lst time up the hill, our instructor made the monkey noise and to our surprise, the reply came right after that from a reasonable near distance! the other group reached there too!! our bearing showed the right way but we just couldn’t find the way out. we met the other group (6PM) & conbined the groups with 1 mission in our mind-to get the #$&^&* out of there as soon as we can coz it won’t be pleasent to stay in the jungle in the dark.

It was already getting dark…

we started to get our flash lights out… there were not enough for everyone so we have to share with the people in front & back of us. a lot of people were tired, oh, btw, again, i am the only female in this group of 20 participants +2 male instructors. So i got to know more about guys frm the other group.Though it was dark but i still manage to enjoy myself coz I don’t worry at all about being lost in the jungle coz with the instructor in charge, everything shd be fine. 1 of our group member were pulled out during lunch stop coz the instructor knew what was going to happen & felt that he couldn’t make it. He was sent back to the base by the mother boat.

there were 1 injured member in my grp. muscles cramped since beginning of after lunch trip and strained them too.

we had to go through the swamp to get out faster and the leeches were partying on us… it wasn’t the primary concern anymore so by now, don’t really care about leeches anymore. Furthermore, I have not donate blood  for a ong time, ahhaaha.

The night tracking, was so much more difficult than day tracking. have to be more careful going down hills. so we slided a lot, crawls too. my track bottom were thorned so i got to throw it at the end of the trip. a few of the guys too got their track bottom thorned.

Instructors finally took out the cell phone & call our course director who were on standby adn told him our situation.  The instructor did not ask for the rescue team-guess they are still confident to find the way out…after that they tried to call the female instructor who were waiting for us at the camping site (the monkey sound) & we had to be so quiet to listen for the response but we did not hear teh response. The jungle is too thick and sound from outside is said to be difficult to get in. We were told later that she heard us clearly but we couldn’t hear her response.

We finally got out at 2AM. some other group in the past came out the next day 2PM coz they usually stop tracking at 6PM, camp on the peak & continue the next morning. There is possibility that our instrcutor saw that we still have energy and they felt we can make it through the night, so they continued. That is their first time too doing night tracking.

we did the leech check at the camp site. all the bloody socks-yucks!! some had like 20 leeches on 1 SPOT!!! we used salt to get them off. The guys including the instructors got like more than 30 bites but to my surprised, i only had 9!!!! 3 on my ankle, 2 on my front neck, 1 at the back of my neck near my hair, 1 on my front right waist, 2 on my back waist. and during that check i only found the one near my hair. all others were long gone, left only their marks. Some of the leeches i found were drown in my shoes coz they are waterproof shoes, haaha,

the next morning we were told to get ready at 10AM for the final tracking. We were given a choice to either continue our tracking or quit it coz the instructor said that destination is not important but the experience and through our experience last night, we have actually graduated the final XPDC. We were asked to discuss and come up with 1 answer.

The other group decided to call it a quit coz they were sent and sponsored by their company (compulsory). but my group members paid for themselves except 1 pax so our majority decided to keep going. we left the camp site proud…the other group cheered for us. the mother boat was scheduled to pick them up there soon.

We had hiked for only half an hour when our injured member gave up. we discussed and we decided to quit since we have to make group decision. so, we all went back to base by boat, looking at the hills that we climbed…there were kind of a phobic feeling in most of us when looking at this island. some even said wld never come back to this island (its one of the tourist attraction), some said would form a committee to report to the boss who sent them there about their disagreement to sending staff there, hahahaha

so, actually for that tracking part, we did not have solid food for like over 24 hours coz our last meal was in the morning before the tracking started and the next meal we had was after we reached the base at 2PM next day. My stomach forgot what is food before we reached the base…

102_0848for the last 3 days, we did our project for the school, had our BBQ nite, closing on the last day & got our title as an ex-Bounder.

That is my local camping experience…
